![I’m pleased to share that I will be presenting as part of a panel at the American Psychological Association’s Division 24 Spring Meeting 2026 at York University in Toronto.
This year’s conference theme is “Madness, Mysticism, and the Reenchantment of Psychology.” Division 24—The Society for Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology—fosters critical engagement with psychology’s scientific and philosophical foundations and the assumptions that shape how we define sanity, knowledge, and authority.
The panel, titled “Madness as a Transpersonal Encounter,” explores how experiences often labeled as pathological can function as meaningful, relational, and transformative forms of knowing. I will be presenting alongside my thoughtful peers whose work is expanding and deepening conversations within Transpersonal Psychology.
In my presentation, I will examine spirit possession traditions in India and how certain forms of possession that are frequently dismissed as madness within Western psychiatric frameworks operate as relational modes of leadership. I will explore how altered states become socially recognized forms of authority, reshaping how we understand legitimacy, agency, and leadership itself.
